Six Steps to Prevention

1 Look Safe and Secure
  • Keep your business clean, uncluttered and well-stocked.
  • Whenever possible, have more than one employee on duty.
  • Keep your cash register in a well-lighted location and where cashiers can see entrances.
2 Put the robber on stage! Good visibility is important.
  • Front doors and windows should be kept clear of signs and posters.
  • Parking areas should be well lighted.
  • The checkout should be clearly visible.
  • Place height markers at main entrance door, to judge the height of the robber.
  • Use special mirrors for surveillance.
3 Look Out for Danger!
  • Stay alert.
  • Practice observation with your employees. Ask them to describe a customer who was just in your business establishment.
  • Watch for persons entering and leaving repeatedly without making purchases.
4 Be in Charge!
  • Be sociable. Greet every person who comes into the store.
  • Look each customer directly in the eye.
  • Give the impression you're not alone.
  • Leave a radio or TV playing in a back room.
5 Don't Flash the Cash
  • Adopt a cash-on-hand policy.
  • No large bills after a certain time.
  • Don't count large amounts of cash in public view.
  • Place excess in a "drop safe."
  • Keep large bills out of the cash register and in the safe.
  • Use signs asking customers to pay with smallest bills possible.
6 Deposit at the Bank
  • Deposit money as often as possible.
  • Vary your banking routine.
  • Carry your deposit in a variety of ways: lunch sack, brief case. Don't use a bank bag.
  • Bank at different times.
  • Vary your route to the bank.
  • Take a quick look outside prior to leaving.
